Once a year there is paddling for the benefit of our foundation. When the sound of boisterous shouting and the dull thud of the drums roll across the Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg, it means the now legendary Dragon Boat Cup of the Michael Stich Foundation is taking place!
Dragon boats have been a part of the center of Hamburg since as far back as 1989. Back then, representatives of the Chinese city of Taipei brought the first specimens as a present for the 800th birthday of Hamburg's harbor.
The first Dragon Boat Cup was held in the summer of 2005 on the Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg in support of the Michael Stich Foundation. The proceeds from donations back then were used to help the University Clinic Eppendorf, which was going to be closed. Since 2006, we have paddled every year on the second Friday in June on the Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg.
With lots of fun and a great deal of ambition, our friends and supporters turn into competitors.
Up to 18 teams, each with 18 paddlers, compete against one another on the energy-sapping 200-meter course and fight for the coveted trophy. Boats being caught by a perfect wave and all of its occupants being forced to open bathing season is practically tradition.
For many Hamburg companies and celebrities, the annual event is a must – collecting donations together and often making helpful contacts with other companies and creating synergies in the relaxed atmosphere.
The culmination of the event is traditionally a relaxed get together on the same evening as part of the prevention event in Hamburg's east hotel + restaurant. With culinary delicacies and good music everyone celebrates the real winner of the day: children who can be quickly and unbureaucratically helped with the donations raised by paddling.
We thank all participants and volunteers, without whom the Dragon Boat Cup would not be possible.
